DIRECTIONS

Directions for Cars

Take NY State Thruway (1-87) to Kingston exit #19. Leave traffic circle on Route 28 West (toward Pine Hill). In 12 miles (just past Winchell’s Pizza on left) turn left onto Reservoir Rd. Cross the Ashokan Reservoir, turn left at “T”. Bear right down the hill past the first left turn (Rt 28A East) and merge onto 28A West. Go 1/4 mile & turn left onto Beaverkill Road. Go 1 mile then turn right into the the Ashokan Center driveway & follow signs.

Additional info can also be found on The Ashokan Center website here.

Directions by Bus and Taxi

Trailways buses stop at Kingston, and it’s about 25 minutes to Ashokan from the Kingston Bus Station, 400 Washington Avenue. Taxi service option: Kingston Kabs.

Directions by Air

Albany International is the closest major airport, about 1.5 hours/75 miles from The Ashokan Center. It is smaller & less congested than NYC airports. You can take a bus or taxi to the Albany bus station, located at 34 Hamilton Street, then a bus to Kingston & a taxi to Ashokan (then follow directions above).

There are also a limited number of buses that go directly from Albany Airport to the Kingston bus station. Info about airlines & ground transportation options from Albany Airport (including taxi & bus service) can be found here.

Stewart Airport in Newburgh is about 1 hour/50 miles from The Ashokan Center. It’s a little closer than the Albany airport, but it is smaller and has less flights. Info about airlines & ground transportation options (including taxi and bus) can be found here. There’s a connecting bus from Newburgh to Kingston via the Shortline Bus Station, located at 60 Route 17k. Their number is 845-561-0734.

Newark Liberty International Airport in Newark, NJ is about 2.5 hours/115 miles from camp. It is the furthest from camp of the 3 airports, but is the largest and has the most flights. Info about airlines & ground transportation options, (including taxi & bus service) can be found here. From the airport take ground transportation to the Port Authority Bus terminal in Manhattan and then take a Trailways bus to Kingston, following the bus/taxi directions above. We also recommend looking up direct airport shuttle service to Kingston, NY, as this may be faster and easier than taking ground transportation and a bus.

ABOUT US

Sarah and John met in Toronto in August 2006 when their bands played the same show. Technically, they’d met before in passing when John booked a show for Sarah’s band The Creeping Nobodies in Brooklyn with his band Jah Division. But the Toronto show was serendipitous - at the end of the night they both realized they’d lost their keys, and each wandered around the venue, searching. (John’s van keys were found in his drum case, Sarah’s house keys in a car). As their respective vehicles pulled out of the parking lot, they each looked out the window at the other and their gazes met. They shared a smile that felt like it meant something. It lingered in each of their minds.

MySpace was still the thing back in 2006, and after the show Sarah “friended” John’s band Oneida. John felt emboldened, and sent her a message from his personal MySpace account. And then…

…Sarah wrote back. Of course she did!

With Sarah living in Toronto and John in NYC, they struck up a correspondence that quickly turned romantic. They sent each other photos, and began speaking on the phone. John visited Sarah in Toronto one weekend in September. They met up in Trinity Bellwoods Park, and later rode bikes around the city. They continued to correspond, and Sarah visited John in NYC. He met her at the airport with flowers.

They fell in love and tried to have a long distance relationship, but it didn’t work out. Heartbreak! Despite their best efforts - they both really missed each other. They thought about each other for years.

Sarah finished her degree, and ultimately had to bid farewell to Canada to return to the U.S. She moved to Brooklyn, and couldn’t help hoping she would eventually run into John. In the meantime, John noticed that she had moved to Brooklyn through the internet. He thought that was exciting news!

They both kept their eyes out for each other, until finally they ran into each other at a concert one fateful night in early 2010. They tried to play it cool, but seriously? These two aren’t capable! They soon started dating again.

9.5 years later…they hope to see you at their wedding!
